Derrick Ho (Hung Chak Ho) is a Research Fellow at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-informatics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Derrick was trained as an environmental geoscientist during his undergraduate and master studies, while he has turned to be a multidisciplinary researcher with major focuses on spatial demography, environmental epidemiology, and urban sustainability from his PhD program.
Starting from his undergraduate experiences, Derrick has extensively worked on research projects related to Big Data analytics and spatial modelling for disaster risk management; and regional studies to analyze human-environmental interaction, particularly in environmental health impacts and population stress. Derrick also gets an interest to integrate the research outputs to policy implications and knowledge transfer. This includes a co-development of government-based Heat Exposure Integrated Deprivation Index (HEIDI) with the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, Canada, for disaster risk reduction of extreme hot weather events.
Derrick is currently a research member of a “Smart City” project for sustainable urban development across Hong Kong. This research project is particularly targeting on the dynamic characterization of a smart city. His research duties focus on 1) developing spatiotemporal models to predict environmental exposure, 2) studying spatial relationships between the environmental exposure and urban health risk, and 3) applying sustainable planning protocols to mitigate environmental health risks.
Other research of Derrick with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have included 1) leading research projects for reducing disastrous impacts on population health after extreme weather events, such as haze, dust storm, and extreme heat across Hong Kong; 2) being a supportive role of research project to monitor rock stability for landslide prevention in Hong Kong; and 3) working as a “Big data” analyst to evaluate the environmental burdens on population stress across the “Belt and Road” countries, in order to deliver notable information for mitigation and governance.
In addition, Derrick has been co-developing a land development project (www.landdevelopability.org) with the Population Research Institute at the Pennsylvania State University. He has published various papers for environmental risk analyses, land use planning and spatial modelling in high-impact journals.
